The Making Connections Leadership Institute

Throughout the South Side, Elmwood and West End neighborhoods of Providence, residents are using their ideas, energy and talents to create a better future for their families and community. Through the Making Connections Leadership Institute (MCLI), Making Connections Providence offers residents a training opportunity to strengthen their skills and help them take on leadership roles around important issues.

The Leadership Institute is a twelve-week program for community members. The MCLI curriculum  has been designed to target adults, youth and parents.  All MCLI curricula include in-depth discussion and analysis of community issues.   Understanding and using compelling data to illustrate the disparities in opportunity for residents in the Making Connections Providence neighborhoods as compared to surrounding areas of both the City and State is a key part of each Making Connections Providence Leadership Institute.

MCLI is taught by Making Connections Providence staff,  leaders of local community based organizations, city department leaders (such as the Providence School Department) and resident leaders who are graduates of the MCLI program.  After graduation, participants are committed to contributing time to working on solutions for improving their neighborhood.

 Workshop topics include:

  • Public speaking
  • Communication across cultures
  • Immigration and citizenship
  • Mapping your neighborhood
  • Understanding and using neighborhood data
  • Financial education

Following the classroom portion of the Leadership Institute, neighborhood residents receive individual support from Making Connections Providence throughout the year as they participate in other trainings and serve on planning bodies and non-profit boards that affect the well-being of children and families in our neighborhoods.
