Making Connections to Strengthen Neighborhoods

When surveyed, residents speak of the need for safe, clean streets and attractive parks, a more active community life, and increased community pride in and commitment to the neighborhood. Neighbors emphasized the importance of reaching out to area families – especially those who may be isolated – engaging in dialogue and making connections to important resources, new friends and neighbors, economic opportunities, and support.

Priority efforts include:

  • Through Making Connections projects such as the Making Connections Leadership Institute (link to MCLI in Community Leaders Section) and Community Grants (Link to Community Grants in Community Leaders Section), identifying and nurturing adult and youth leadership among residents;
  • Working with community members, Public Broadcasting, and the Center for Communications and Community, and others to address media stereotypes and educate the public about the positive aspects of the neighborhoods through a media awareness campaign; and,
  • Through a partnership with Cathedral of Life, increase the quality of civic engagement and awareness among community members on important community issues.
  • Working with the Family Life Center, increase the ability of people with prison records to successfully re-enter the neighborhood and participate in civic activities.
